What Are CoreSCs?

CoreSC is short for Core Scientific Concept. It is part of  an annotation scheme proposed by M. Liakata. Annotating scientific papers on a sentence by sentence basis using the CoreSC schema allows Partridge to identify the information structure within the paper and facilitates machine learning. Partridge uses SAPIENTA to annotate papers when they are uploaded to the system, enabling it to classify the paper and enable searching within specific CoreSCs.

These are the 11 different types of CoreSC commonly found in scientific papers. Many of them are familiar to people with scientific backgrounds:

  • Hypothesis
  • Background
  • Model
  • Motivation
  • Goal
  • Object
  • Method
  • Experiment
  • Observation
  • Result
  • Conclusion

For more information about the CoreSC schema see this paper.
